About the book

Renowned artist Kaz Tanahashi reveals the deep, inner spiritual connections that Zen gardens can foster, with over 75 stunning full-color photos of the masterpiece gardens of Kyōto, Japan.

Imagine yourself in Kyōto, Japan, gazing at an ancient temple garden. How would you contextualize what you are seeing? What is the history of the contemplative art form of Zen gardening, which has flourished for centuries? What aesthetic principles inform it?

Richly illustrated with full-color photographs, Gardens of Awakening guides you through a series of Zen temple gardens created from the fourteenth through seventeenth centuries. Some are teeming with plants and flowing water, while others have only rocks and sand. All share in the Zen aesthetics of awakening.

Through essays and commentary on Mitsue Nagase’s striking photographs, beloved Zen artist and translator Kaz Tanahashi presents the gardens in terms of seven qualities that arise from Zen practice: direct, ordinary, vigorous, gleaming, pivotal, nondual, and inexhaustible. Relating these qualities to the development of Zen culture and its influence on Japanese art, Gardens of Awakening invites you deep into the heart of Zen.

About the book

Come along to Española Island, in the Galápagos archipelago, one of the only places in the world where the waved albatross breeds. Meet Waverly, a young albatross who is afraid to spread her wings and fly. What if she gets lonely? What if she misses home? As Waverly thinks things over, she befriends other unusual and special animals on Española Island. Together, they help Waverly discover just how brave she can be. This rhyming story skillfully explores themes of anxiety, friendship, and bravery while introducing kids to the real-world life cycle of the waved albatross. "Waverly Braves the Breeze: The Story of a Galápagos Albatross" centers on the process of fledging, when young albatrosses reach the age of about six months and leave their home on Española Island to spend years at sea. The charming story is followed by robust educational backmatter about the Galápagos.

About the author

Brandon Maly was taught to love and appreciate all animals while growing up in Illinois and visiting the Brookfield and Lincoln Park zoos. This appreciation grew even greater when he met his wife and wildlife biologist Stephanie. He is a passionate advocate for AZA-affiliated zoos and aquariums and their dedication to research, conservation, education, and science. Zoos played a major part in shaping his life, and he wants to raise awareness of the value they bring to species conservation. Brandon currently lives in Madison, Wisconsin, with his wife, their two cats Chaos and Junebug, and their Russian tortoise Olivia. In his free time, he enjoys playing ultimate frisbee, biking and running around the city, touring the State Capitol building, and, of course, visiting the Henry Vilas Zoo.

But that's easier said than done in a case that involves messages from the dead, a seductive spiritualist, and Becca Collinsthe beautiful daughter of the deceased, who Will quickly starts falling for.
